The Dendron Virginia Town Council has approved zoning changes necessary for Old Dominion Electric Cooperative to build what could become Virginia’s largest coal-fired power plant.
The vote came at almost midnight when three council members voted to abstain and try to hold off on passing the amendment, but the three others voted to go ahead with the changes needed for the power plant. Mayor Yvonne Pierce broke the tie.
The Surry County Board of Supervisors must also approve the changes Thursday night.
Old Dominion wants to build a 1,500-megawatt coal-fired plant at an estimated cost of up to $6 billion.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation opposes the zoning changes. Foundation Advocate Chris Moore argues the cooperative’s request lacks details about the proposed plant’s impact on the community, environment and public health.
