A new place to buy beer and Wine on Sundays in Richmond & Williamsburg VA

ukropswilliamsburgva The 25 Ukrop’s stores acquired by Dutch supermarket giant Ahold will change their name to Martin’s this spring.

In addition to the name change, the stores will open on Sunday and sell beer and wine.

The changes were contained in a news release announcing the completion of the sale of Richmond-based Ukrop’s Super Markets Inc.to Ahold’s Pennsylvania-based Giant-Carlisle division.

Ahold announced that the sale in December. The Ukrop’s family started the grocery chain in 1937 and built it into the dominant grocery retailer in the Richmond area. The stores put a high emphasis on customer service but did not open on Sundays or sell beer and wine.

Ahold said the Ukrops family would continue to supply kitchen and bakery goods to the stores. Also, the stores will continue providing courtesy clerks who will take customers’ groceries to their cars.

The Giant-Carlisle division had nine Martin’s stores in Virginia before the Ukrop’s acquisition..
