Old Dominion Electric Cooperative says it’s extending its schedule to seek air permits for a proposed $6 billion coal-fired plant in southeastern Virginia.
The suburban Richmond utility said Wednesday in a news release that the extension doesn’t affect its commitment to build the proposed Cypress Creek Power Station in Surry County. Old Dominion says it already has invested more than $20 million in the project.
Old Dominion says it expects to restart the process for filing for air permits in 18 months to two years.
The utility said demand for electricity is growing but at a slower pace than anticipated because of the economy’s slow growth.
Environmental groups said the company should seek alternatives to the coal-fired plant.
