How cool is this. Our two sons play youth football with the Williamsburg Hornets. When we got to practice yesterday there were six players from the William and Mary Tribe Football team.
Through the course of the evening practice these starting players coached , participated in drills and ran plays with the team , as they demonstrated “high level” technique and proper form. W&M players also emphasized the important points of football and explained how practicing well will pay dividends in the future. The youth players also had the opportunity to ask Tribe players questions about their experiences playing football growing up and developing into Division I student-athletes.
We had over 200 kids from ages 6-14 attending practice that day. Many of the youngest players enjoyed getting a chance to interact with the “giant players” who dwarfed them, while the older fourth- and fifth-year veteran players enjoyed trying to “school” the college players by testing them on pass routes and coverage.
What a thrill for the boys and what a great way to give back to the community. To give you an idea of how hot it was that day. We couldn’t even practice on the field at first since the heat index was over 102 degrees. That didn’t seem to phase any of the Tribe players has they showed the boys what to do.
Thank you to the Tribe and the following players for making practice so special.
The six players included senior captains who participated in our practice yesterday were: #16, R.J. Archer, Quarterback #6 David Caldwell, Safety # 93 Sean Lissemore, Defensive Tackle. #4 DJ Mcaulay, Wide Receiver, #97 Adrian Tracy, Defensive End, #98 Rob Varno , Tight End.
The Hornets participate in a few events at Zable Stadium, home of the Tribe, this fall. The Williamsburg Hornets Midgets squads (10 and 11-years old) will play against each other in an abbreviated halftime show exhibition game during the W&M contest against Central Connecticut State on Sept. 12. Additionally, when the Tribe is away at Northeastern on Oct. 10, all WYFCL Hornets teams will play regularly scheduled league games at Zable Stadium.
If you are interested in youth football in the Williamsburg, Va area come check out the Williamsburg Hornets. If you want to see them in action go to the William and Mary football game September 12th at Zable Stadium as they play Central Connecticut State. Our Hornets will scrimmage during halftime as we did last year . Quite a thrill for these youngsters to play football in a college stadium during half-time.
The WYFCL fields seven teams that play in the Peninsula Youth Football League (PYFA), which is comprised of 16 leagues from West Point, Gloucester, Williamsburg, York County, Poquoson and Hampton.
