New School Redistricting Maps

The Williamsburg/ James City County  School Board met in special session Tuesday, Jan. 12, to inspect the latest updated set of redistricting maps. The board received six updated maps — which included three options for its elementary schools and three for its middle schools — but board members say the maps are still far from perfect.

The maps were redrawn after the School Board asked , Education Logistics, to continue to use proximity, capacity and socioeconomic balance to guide school redistricting, but to also keep neighborhoods together.

School board  member Joe Fuentes  requested one map using proximity as the main criteria and existing outlines as guidance. He asked for a second map keeping proximity and socioeconomic diversity as criteria, raising capacity at Rawls Byrd and Matthew Whaley elementary schools to 90-95 percent and, if necessary, splitting large neighborhoods by major thoroughfares.

For elementary schools, the board also asked that neighborhoods zoned for James River Elementary continue to attend that school.

These maps are very preliminary and will be the subject of a Board discussion at its Feb. 2 meeting.  Two public forums also will be scheduled after the Board’s Feb. 2 meeting to obtain additional public comment on the updated maps.
