Verizon has announced  that it is ending delivery of residential phone books. Customers will still be able to request a free printed white pages or a CD-ROM version, or find residential listings online.

Verizon will continue to distribute a yellow pages with business and government listings.

Customers will still be able to order free residential print and CD-ROM versions of white pages directories by calling (800) 888-8448 as each local yellow pages directory begins delivery.

In addition, white pages listings are accessible at www.verizon.com/whitepages.

This information will be included in customers’ bills every three months.

Verizon said that stopping phone book publishing will remove about 1,640 tons of paper from the state’s waste stream each year.

Phone book use has fallen steeply, New York-based Verizon said, citing research by Gallup that found only 11 percent of households used the white pages.
