Former Defense secretary named chancellor at William & Mary

Robert M. Gates, who served as secretary of defense under President Barack Obama and President George W. Bush, has been named chancellor of the College of William & Mary.

Gates, who retired as defense secretary earlier this summer, received his undergraduate degree in history from William & Mary in 1965. He received an honorary degree from the school in 2007.
He is the first defense secretary in U.S. history to serve under presidents from the Democratic and Republican parties.

Gates will succeed former U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who will complete her term in February 2012. Other chancellors have included Henry Kissinger and Margaret Thatcher.

The William & Mary chancellor typically serves in the honorary post for seven years, participating in major ceremonies and other events on campus.
