Virginia Symphony Announces 2012-2013 Season

imageThe Virginia Symphony Orchestra announces its 2012-2013 concert season, including a range of Classical, POPS! and Family programs to be performed in five venues across the Hampton Roads region. Once again the orchestra will present a series of eight classical concerts at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, the Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News and the Sandler Center for Performing Arts in Virginia Beach. The orchestra will also continue its five-concert POPS! series at Chrysler Hall, and will expand the series to the Peninsula, presenting a series of three concerts at the Ferguson Center. Subscriptions are available now and start at only $107 for Classics and $56 for POPS!.

 

The Classics Series

The eight-concert Classics season is filled with audience-appealing classical favorites showcasing composers much loved by JoAnn Falletta and Symphony audiences. “We’ve included some of your all-time favorites – thrilling repertoire like Mussorgsky/Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition, Respighi Pines of Rome, Beethoven Symphony No. 7, Schubert Symphony No. 9 and Mozart Requiem,” stated VSO Music Director JoAnn Falletta. “We will be joined by a galaxy of stars from violin virtuoso Chloe Hanslip to piano superstar Jon Kimura Parker to extraordinary double bassist Edgar Meyer,” she continued. “This is truly a season not to miss, and one that you will always remember!”

  The VSO POPS!

The five-concert POPS! series once again offers a little something for everyone. “We’ve definitely hit our stride delivering what audiences tell us are wonderful entertaining programs that only the Virginia Symphony Pops can present,” stated VSO President and Executive Director Eric Borenstein.

In 2012- 2013, the POPS! series will be also presented at the Ferguson Center in Newport News.

Series concerts include:

  • TAKE 6: Symphony With Soul, September 22, 2012. Ten-time GRAMMY and Dove award-winning a cappella jazz and soul singing group TAKE 6 bring their richly layered and masterful vocal harmonies to open the VSO POPS! series.
  • Let’s Go to the (Silent) Movies, November 2 and 3, 2012. Travel back in time to the glamorous 1920s for an evening of music and film with guest conductor Rick Benjamin and “The Clown Princes.” Experience Charlie Chaplin’s The Pawnshop, Buster Keaton’s Cops and Harold Lloyd’s Get Out and Get Under with incidental music from their original scores performed LIVE.
  • Holiday POPS, December 15 and 16, 2012. VSO Chorusmaster and Conductor Robert Shoup shares seasonal songs and traditional carols delivered in full sound and spectacle by your hometown Orchestra along with the inspirational voices of Virginia Symphony Chorus and other special guests.
  •   At the Copa: A Tribute to Barry Manilow, February 7 and 9, 2013. Phantom star and Broadway veteran Gary Mauer pays tribute to the music of the incomparable Barry Manilow. “This One’s For YOU!”
  •   Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, March 22 and 23, 2013. Multi-platinum, high-voltage Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will have you swinging in the aisles with their irresistible fusion of classic American sounds from jazz, swing, Dixieland and big-band music. “America’s Favorite Little Big Band” is shaking things up with our own Virginia Symphony POPS!
