Are you thinking about buying a home, but not sure where to start, especially in challenging economic times? James City County’s free First-time Homebuyer Class can help.
In one day of training, you’ll learn the entire home buying process from start to finish, and how to stay on track as a responsible homeowner.
The James City County Office of Housing and Community Development will hold a First-time Homebuyer class Tuesday, April 24 and Thursday, April 26 from 6-9 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building, 5300 Palmer Ln., Suite 1A.
Topics covered include personal finances, credit and credit scoring, qualifying and applying for a loan, choosing the right home and what happens at a loan closing. Anyone who is currently purchasing a home or is considering a purchase in the future will benefit from this class. For many applicants, the mortgage company requires them to complete a home buyers class prior to loan approval. Those who attend both sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

James City County’s First-Time Homebuyer Program offers special low-interest rate mortgages for qualified, first-time homebuyers. Down payment, closing cost assistance, and other incentives are also available.Currently, the program offers condominiums, single-family homes and townhomes to homebuyers with a yearly salary between $38,000-$67,000.
General qualifications for home purchase through the program include:
- Living or working in James City County
- Meeting income guidelines, and having good credit history.
- Credit report should not show unpaid collections or past due accounts, and the credit score should be at least 620.

Homes are currently available in the JCC program for qualified buyers in the communities of Braemar Creek,Williamsburg Village at Norge,Liberty Crossing and Ironbound Square.
