A special reading and traditional carols highlight this year’s annual Christmas Eve tree lighting ceremony on Market Square in Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24. The community is invited to gather at the Courthouse on Duke of Gloucester Street for the special program.
Prior to the tree lighting, guests can witness an 18th-century holiday tradition at 5 p.m., the firing of the Christmas guns. During the 18th century, it was customary for guns to be fired in salute to the holiday season and as an expression of joy and celebration. Actor-interpreter Stephen Seals will read the classic “Twas the Night Before Christmas” at 5:25 p.m.
Members of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg will participate in the tree lighting ceremony. City of Williamsburg Mayor Clyde Haulman officially turns the switch to light the live evergreen tree with 6,000 lights installed by Colonial Williamsburg operations staff.
Colonial Williamsburg and the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg have cosponsored the lighting of a Christmas tree on Market Square since 1959.
