It started two years ago as a mere indentation. Now the sinkhole in front of Steve and Betsy Hall’s Fernbrook home measures roughly 10 feet in diameter and six feet deep.
"Every time we have a good, hard rain, it increases six inches to a foot," Steve Hall said this week. He fears for neighborhood kids.
The hole is just one of several that have emerged in Fernbrook, off Greensprings Road, since it was developed in the early 2000s, multiple sources said this week.
The problem isn’t unique geography, county General Services Director John Horne said in an interview. The issue is with the underground drainage system. When the pipes fail, water escapes into the soil surrounding them and erodes underground, causing a cave-in at the surface.
