Charlottesville, Richmond, and Newport News were named among the nation’s “Top 100 Places to Live” in 2014, according to Livability.
Working with researchers at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, and using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, USDA, Walk Score, Great Schools, Americans for the Arts, and others, Livability examined more than 1,700 small and mid-sized cities across the country.
The rankings were based on a variety of factors, including local economics, quality and availability of healthcare, affordability, quality of education and infrastructure, and local amenities such as parks, museums, and music venues.
Charlottesville scored #26 on the list: “A strong support for arts and culture lend to the city’s visual and intellectual appeal, and literature lovers will feel right at home in this Top 10 City for Book Lovers.”
Richmond was ranked #57: “The city has a strong business climate with several Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies, as well as small businesses […] Richmond also features a variety of attractions and activities, and is home to a thriving restaurant scene.
And Newport News was #77: “Newport News scored high in the areas of health care and amenities as well as demographics.”
Livability also cited as other best places to live in Virginia outside the top 100 as: Abingdon, Alexandria, Bedford, Blacksburg, Centreville, Chesapeake, Danville, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Reston, and Suffolk.
Charlottesville is also listed by Livability as one of the “Top 10 Romantic Cities,” and Alexandria made the company’s list of “Top 10 Foodie Cities.”
