LPGA Kingsmill Championship returns to Williamsburg VA 2014

May 12-2014

The LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship returns to Williamsburg VA later  this week with a new presenting sponsor.

Play starts Thursday May 15 on the River Course at Kingsmill Resort with a field that features eight of the top 10 golfers in the Rolex world golf rankings, including defending champion Cristie Kerr and 17-year-old phenom Lydia Ko.

Cristie Kerr returns as the defending champion. Kerr has earned three of her 16 career LPGA victories at the resort’s River Course, as she also won the tournament in 2009 and 2005.

Kerr had her hands full with 2007 Kingsmill champion Suzann Pettersen last year, besting the Norwegian on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff after sinking a two-footer for par. The last seven champions have posted at least three rounds in the 60s en route to the winner’s circle, and this year should be no different.

Kerr will have to contend with the likes of Stacy Lewis, Lydia Ko, Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson and Karrie Webb – who won the tournament in 2006 – among others. Se Ri Pak (2004) is another past Kingsmill champion in the field this week, so the player roster is loaded with talent once again at the $1.3 million event.

Golf Channel will be there to bring four rounds of coverage to fans not lucky enough to see it in person.

The Kingsmill Championship begins a four-week run for the LPGA that includes trips to Alabama, New Jersey and Ontario, and there is a heap of money up for grabs in the coming weeks. Ten events into the 2014 slate, LPGA players will begin looking to make moves in the standings as summer approaches, and it all begins this week.

The South Korean broadcast company JTBC has signed up as a partner this year and is expected to bolster the tournament’s international presence. JTBC reaches 21 million households in Korea, according to a Kingsmill release.

The tournament is booked at Kingsmill through 2017. This is the 11th event on this year’s LPGA schedule.

Jones Golf Trail in Virginia

Few names in golf course architecture are as recognizable as that of the Jones family: The late, great genius Robert Trent Jones and his equally renowned sons, Robert Trent Jones II and Rees Jones, a.k.a. "The U.S. Open Doctor." Together, the three industry giants have designed or remodeled nearly 1,000 courses across the globe.

The State of Virginia can now boast of its own version of the Jones Trail highlighting essentially three eras of course design. Golfers can play the Golden Horseshoe’s Robert Trent Jones-designed Gold Course and Rees Jones-designed Green Course. A short trip down Intestate 64 from Williamsburg lies the  popular Rees Jones-designed Club at Viniterra in New Kent. Viniterra is quickly becoming one of the regions’ most popular courses.

golden horseshoe golf williamsburg vaThe Golden Horseshoe Golf Club is located just a few miles from Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area. Two internationally acclaimed courses — the Gold and the Green — as well as the executive-length Spotswood Course make Golden Horseshoe one of the premier members of the "Resort Collection of Colonial Williamsburg."

Fittingly for a family destination, golf at Golden Horseshoe is a father-son affair. Trent Jones Sr. designed the Gold Course in 1963 and Rees came along to build the Green Course nearly 30 years later. Golden Horseshoe’s Gold Course combines panoramic views with intriguing and often-difficult shot demands; or as Trent Jones Sr. called it, "a natural arboretum upon which a great golf course has been built. The overall result is perfection."

Opened in 1963, the Gold Course is both an enduring example of traditional golf course architecture – walk able and free of surrounding real estate development – an excellent counterpart to its companion Green Course, which at 7,120 yards plays a little tougher than its sibling. The par on Green is 72, the course is rated an intimidating 75.1, with a slope of 134. Rees incorporated rolling fairways among old-growth woodlands with water in play of six of the 18 holes. "The course defines the shot," he said, "but gives the player several options. It’s a shot maker’s course." The Green Course hosgolf course @ viniterra in new kentted the 2004 U.S Women’s Public Links Championship.

Located just off I-64 in New Kent toward Richmond, The Club at Viniterra opened in late 2009 as an amenity to help sell real estate and once the golf course fully matured, the developers elected to open the course for public play earlier this year. Needless to say, Viniterra has won the hearts of the area’s golfers.

Built upon nearly 1,200 acres of wooded and rugged terrain, Viniterra can stretch to nearly 7,800 yards from the tips and flies against the grain of your typical Tidewater design. With massive fairways and run-ups to nearly all of its jaw-dropping green complexes — combined with the thoughtful and strategic placement of various grass, sand and water hazards — Viniterra is enjoyable for golfers who select the proper set of tees, as some holes offer up to a dozen different teeing grounds.

The masterful Jones course routing incorporates many of the diverse, natural features of the site including frequent and dramatic elevation changes, various wetland areas and portions of mature, deciduous forest. Where appropriate, ponds and a total of 13 bridges were built to provide both strategic and aesthetic value. "What you see [at Viniterra] is what you get in terms of being able to see most every shot on the golf course," said Jones. "There are generous fairways and open approaches to many of the greens. If you have happen to go over some greens, there are catch basins and grass hollows to capture those shots."

Shin wins Kingsmill Championship

The two-year winless drought is over for Jiyai Shin who outlasted Paula Creamer in a lengthy nine hole playoff to win the Kingsmill Championship. In the fifth playoff this season, Shin and Creamer were forced to return to the par-4 16th at The River Course Monday morning to determine a winner.

The playoff marks the second in Kingsmill Championship history following the 2007 tournament where Suzann Pettersen defeated Jee Young Lee in three-holes.

The playoff also set a record for the longest playoff between two competitors with the other taking place at the 2004 LPGA Takefuji Classic where Cristie Kerr defeated Seol-An Jeon. The longest playoff in LPGA Tour history came at the 1972 Corpus Christi Civitan Open where Jo Ann Prentice defeated Sandra Palmer and Kathy Whitworth in 10 holes.

On the ninth playoff hole, both players hit routine drives in the fairway and Creamer left herself with a testy 30-foot birdie putt while Shin was faced with a 15-footer.

First up to play was Creamer and the 9-time LPGA Tour winner grazed the lip of the hole but had a tricky six foot putt coming back for par. Shin’s left-to-right birdie putt never saw the hole but the Korean left herself with an easy one-foot putt for par.

Creamer could not convert her 6-foot par putt and left the door open for Shin to knock in her 2-foot par putt for her ninth career LPGA Tour victory.

Fords Colony Country Club Sale is imminent

clubhouse entry[4]The Country Club Membership Association for Fords Colony has been notified that a Purchase and Sale agreement has been signed with an un-named party for the sale of Fords Colony Country Club in Williamsburg, VA.

The Williamsburg, Va., club filed for bankruptcy two years ago and went on the market in the spring of 2011. Its purchase price was set at $8.5 million and Affinity Golf was selected to manage the club by Prudential .

Mr. Richard Curlin at Prudential stated “ The agreement allows for a “due diligence” time period of 45 days followed by a closing time period of 30 days. So, if all would proceed according to plan, The Country Club could be under new ownership by the end of October 2012

At this time the buyer has not been announced  but should be soon.

Surveyors have been  working around  the golf courses over the past month. They are in the process of re-affirming the boundary lines of the property in anticipation of an eventual sale. Additionally, the Marsh Hawk bunker renovation project has been delayed, awaiting the outcome of the sale negotiations. 17 Marsh Hawk[4]
Curlin has confirmed that the bunker renovation project will be specifically addressed as part of the sale contract or be undertaken by current ownership as originally planned if the sale does not go through.

Ford’s Colony Country Club in Williamsburg had filed for bankruptcy protection in April of 2012, with debts of at least $10 million.

The company listed assets worth somewhere between $10 million and $50 million. It listed its debt within the same range, according to paperwork filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The bulk of the debt is owed to Prudential on a $18 million note issued in 2007 When the club first filed for Chapter 11 protection, Richard Ford explained that new memberships were down, tied to the crash in the real estate market. Discretionary spending among existing members also declined, as had tournaments and special events.

LPGA Returns to Kingsmill in 2012

River Course KingsmillThe  LPGA came up with one more addition before unveiling its full 2012 schedule, returning to another former stronghold with a return to Kingsmill Resort , near Williamsburg , VA after a two-year hiatus.

The LPGA schedule — which the tour will officially release later Tuesday — for now will feature 27 events, up from 23 last year, and includes the $1.3 million Kingsmill Championship in Williamsburg, Va., which will be sponsored by Kingsmill and Xanterra Parks & Resorts, the resort’s owner. The tournament will be played Sept. 6-9 this year — and will return in 2013 to a traditional early May date,  according to the LPGA.

“We are truly thrilled to bring the world’s best golfers back to Kingsmill, where the LPGA has such a great history,” said LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan. “As our players will attest, Kingsmill is a premier venue and we all look forward to working closely with the resort’s new owner, Xanterra, on this tournament. In 2012, the LPGA’s motto is “See Why It’s Different Out Here,” and we hope that fans and media will have the opportunity to find out for themselves.”

The LPGA visited Kingsmill on an annual basis from 2003-2009 for the Michelob Ultra Open, which was enormously popular with players and enthusiastically embraced by fans. The Michelob Ultra Open was one of the most visible casualties of the 2008 acquisition of Anheuser-Busch, which at the time was Kingsmill’s parent company, by European brewing conglomerate InBev. A corporate decision to refocus promotional energy and reallocate sponsorship dollars was primarily responsible for the tournament’s demise.

Players mourned the loss of the Michelob Ultra Open. The $2.2 million event, widely recognized as the LPGA’s "fifth major," unfolded each year in an atmosphere of elegant efficiency. Its field was invariably strong. Its list of champions included some of the most lustrous names in women’s golf: Se Ri Pak (2004), Karrie Webb (2006), Annika Sorenstam (2008) and Cristie Kerr (2005 and 2009).

The new tournament will attempt to construct a legacy of its own. Some connections to past glory remain — Michelob Ultra Open tournament director Wayne Nooe is expected to fill the same role for the Kingsmill Championship — but other ties have vanished. Kingsmill, the event’s title sponsor, is no longer affiliated with Anheuser-Busch. The resort was sold in 2010 to Xanterra Parks and Resorts, a Denver-based hospitality management company.

The Kingsmill Championship marks the most recent foray into professional tournament golf for Xanterra Parks & Resorts, having hosted LPGA, PGA and Senior PGA events at properties that it has previously managed,Silverado Resort, Napa, Calif.; or that are currently managed through affiliated properties including The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Sea Island, Ga.

“We are very excited about the LPGA’s decision to return to Kingsmill Resort,” said Andrew Todd, president and CEO of Xanterra. “Kingsmill’s history as a host of an LPGA tournament was one of the factors we found attractive when we purchased the resort, and it has been a goal of ours to reestablish a relationship with the LPGA and help bring a tournament back to Kingsmill Resort and Williamsburg. We look forward to hosting the players again and presenting a first-class event on our challenging River Course.”

Xanterra acquired Kingsmill Resort from Busch Properties, Inc. on August 1, 2010. Currently, Xanterra is undertaking a $6 million renovation of the resort, including a new resort pool complex and renovations to the marina restaurant and other resort facilities.

In addition to adding four new North American events and one new international event to the 2012 schedule, the LPGA recently announced the renewal of eight of the nine tournament contracts that ended in 2011 and 10 of 11 marketing partnerships that also required new contracts. In addition to these extended agreements, the LPGA has added Kia as its Official Automotive Partner, Frontier Airlines as its Official Airline and MedJet Assist as its Official Medical Evacuation Program. Additionally, Symetra signed on as umbrella partner of the LPGA Futures Tour, now called the Symetra Tour.

Fords Colony Country Club in Williamsburg is Up For Sale

Update March , 2012

Prudential has received multiple bids,  some of which were not acceptable for different reasons. Prudential is now at a point where they, along with their broker, will start to clarify their understanding of the remaining bids to determine if one or more meet their requirements. If it turns out that none of the bids satisfy Prudential’s requirements, then they will retain ownership for a while longer. If one is acceptable, then the parties will enter into a “letter of intent” agreement and the potential buyer will start their “due diligence” process.

Prudential Commercial Property Holding Company (Prudential) assumed club ownership upon Ford’s Colony Country Club (FCCC) exiting bankruptcy. Prudential’s business portfolio does not include operating country clubs and from the start, they made their intentions for selling FCCC known to FCCC membership.

At the end of 2011 Prudential contracted with Marcus & Millichap, a realtor specializing in the sales of golf course and country clubs, to pursue the sale of FCCC.

What is $9,950,000 That’s the price being asked  for Ford’s Colony Country Club, Alex. Almost half of what was owed on the property in April of 2010 when it filed for  bankruptcy. Prudential  Financial named  Affiniti Golf as the new manager in May of 2011 as they emerged from chapter 11 proceedings.Affiniti was brought on to improve the golf courses, the members’ experience, and the financial performance of the club prior to marketing the club for sale.

imageThe club is being marketed by National Golf & Resort Properties Group, a division of Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services.

In it’s sales description is notes “ Essentially, Ford’s Colony lost its identity during bankruptcy/foreclosure, when the allure of revenue growth through increases in public play led to membership discontent. The membership base has fallen from an approximate 1,050 high to a current 749 members. It should be noted that they did add  51 new members since June of 2011.

Country ClubOffered for sale are the 30,000 square foot club, featuring a 5 diamond award winning
dining, a state-of-the-art golf academy, and a pro shop that has continually been rated No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic, 54 Holes of Championship, Dan Maples Golf

45 additional building lots are offered separately at an additional cost.  REO Lots Available at Additional Price.

This has been a painful process for the Country Club and it’s members.

it is important to note that  the Ford’s Colony Country Club has no financial ties to the Home Owner’s Association. The majority of homeowners in Ford’s Colony do not belong to the Country Club.

Golden Horseshoe Golf Review-Williamsburg VA

Golf Writer Andy Reistetter takes his exclusive "Play-Write" series on the road north to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. While known for its historical role in the emergence of American democracy, more should be known about its present-day role as a 45-hole world-class golfing destination. Whereas George Washington and Thomas Jefferson walked down the main street on the way to American liberation, so too have many famous golfers walked the fairways of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. Enjoy this autumn golfing trip with Reistetter, then schedule a golfing trip of your own!

"Are you people of the frontier?" cries Mr. Richard Lee, a historical re-enactor in the R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse when asked a silly question about life and politics in the year of 1765.

The same could be said for seasoned golfers who have yet to play the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Colonial Williamsburg.

Golden Horseshoe Offers $39 Greens Fees to Military on Labor Day Weekend

golden horseshoe golf williamsburgColonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club will participate in the fifth annual Patriot Golf Day Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2 through 5. Golfers who play any time during the weekend may voluntarily contribute a minimum of $1 to the Folds of Honor Foundation. Green fees on the Green Course for all active duty or retired military will be $39 any time Sept. 2–5, and up to three guests may play with the military member for that rate.

The initiative was originated by Maj. Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, who is also a PGA professional and member of the U.S.G.A. Maj. Rooney was aboard a commercial aircraft traveling from Chicago to Grand Rapids, Mich., when the pilot asked passengers to remain seated as a sign of respect while the flag-draped coffin of a fallen soldier was removed from the aircraft and met by the soldier’s family. Maj. Rooney observed the family meeting their son, brother, husband and father and realized he knew nothing of the devastation families endure when a soldier is killed or disabled in action.

LPGA commissioner sees brighter days ahead, possibly at Kingsmill

rivercoursekm_edited-1The sponsor-first mentality introduced to the LPGA by commissioner Mike Whan is creating positive vibrations that could one day be felt in Williamsburg and Kingsmill Resort.

Whan, visiting the LPGA Futures Tour’s Eagle Classic during an off-week on the main tour’s schedule, said Thursday that "dialogue is ongoing with Kingsmill" regarding the possible return of the women’s tour to the sprawling resort on the lower James River.

Kingsmill and Anheuser-Busch played host to a popular LPGA tournament from 2003-2009.

Sponsorship was withdrawn following the acquisition of Anheuser-Busch by European brewing conglomerate InBev.

"That’s not to say that anything is imminent," Whan said. "But we’re talking. There’s mutual interest. The thing we need to do now is figure out the finances that will let us pull it off."

Caddies Return To Golden Horseshoe Golf In Williamsburg

One of golf’s oldest traditions – the caddie – is returning to Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club this summer. Caddies have been part of the game almost from its beginning, but as riding golf carts became popular in the middle of the 20th century, the tradition of the caddie nearly disappeared from all but tournament play.

Caddies at the Golden Horseshoe will be trained and tested by the PGA golf professionals at the Golden Horseshoe, following the Western Golf Association caddie manual and exam. The basic role of a caddie is to assist the player in accordance with the rules of golf, and his or her duties include determining distances, raking the sand in a bunker, tending the flagstick, carrying the golf bag and keeping the clubs clean. A caddie’s knowledge of the golf course can prove invaluable in helping the player plan a shot or select a club, especially when playing a course for the first time.

Caddies at the Golden Horseshoe will know the rules and etiquette of golf, golf terminology and vocabulary, provide advice to the player when asked and be able to readily identify each club. A good caddie can greatly increase the enjoyment of a round of golf.

golden horseshoe golf williamsburg“The Golden Horseshoe is an ideal setting for returning the tradition of caddies,” said PGA golf professional and director of golf Glen Byrnes. “Both the Green and the Gold courses are Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries, free from surrounding development and perfect for a great walk enjoyed.”

The caddie program begins August 1. Individuals interested in using a caddie are asked to let the pro shop attendant know when calling for a tee time at 757-220-7696 or 800-648-6653. Golfers who wish to use a golf cart may still do so. For more information on the Golden Horseshoe caddie program, contact PGA golf professional Greg Lynch at glynch@cwf.org or 757-565-8911.

Ford’s Colony Country Club Bankruptcy Update

Bankruptcy Hearing Update – March 31, 2011

On March 31, 2011 the court ruled in favor of Prudential’s position, which was supported by the CCMA’s attorney, that "all" members should be allowed to vote. This means that all 900 members will have the opportunity to participate in deciding the future direction of the club. This now clears the way for the voting process to begin. The exact timeline for this process will be known within the next few days. The court also ruled that each plan ( Lender: Prudential & Debtor Country Club)  will have it’s own ballot, a third party Solicitation firm will be used to conduct the mailings and vote tabulations.

Ford’s Colony Country Club filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last spring. The Club, Prudential and the Creditors Committee tried to work out a reorganization plan but so far have not been able to agree on a work out plan/

You can view the reorganization plan for Prudential and the creditor’s committee here. View the debtor’s (Ford’s Colony Country Club and Marsh Hawk Country Club) plan here.

The next hearing will be on May 18, 2011
