New restaurant opening in New Town

Saporni Ristorante Italiano will open in New Town on Monday, July 15, 2013

The opening will feature the work of award-winning artists, Lynn Hosegood, with her Italian watercolors series paintings, and Dorothy Greos’ abstract paintings.

The restaurant will be the second location for owners Giuseppe and Angela Amato, with their sons, Dario and Luca , the other restaurant is in Chester, VA

image

The family is from  Carini, a small town on the outskirts of the capital of Sicily. The Amato Family has been in the restaurant business for over 10 years  at their restaurant in Chester.VA and delight in making people feel welcome while enjoying a taste of home.

image"Sapori" is the Italian word for "flavors", and our vision for Sapori is one of authentic, fresh flavors that are a fusion between traditional Sicilian recipes and modern culinary concepts.  Their dishes, most of which come from generations-old family recipes, feature fresh-grown spices from our indoor herb garden. Contrary to the fast-paced world in which we live where prepared foods are full of preservatives and additives, Sapori uses fresh ingredients and handmade sauces as the foundation of it’s flavorful menu. The restaurant shops for local ingredients when in season and display work from local artists to support the community/

image‘Choosing a “Best BBQ” is like choosing the best NFL football them . Well, almost no superbowl in BBQ.

If you need to add a few items to your bucket list pick up a copy of the latest “National Geographic The 10 Best of -Everything: An Ultimate Guide for Travelers”

In the latest edition Williamsburg VA’s Pierces Pitt-Bar- B Que was named among the Top 10 barbeque joints in the US

The remainder of the list includes BBQ spots from North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Mississippi, Texas and  Oregon.

pierces bbq williamsburg vaSince 1971, people have enjoyed coming to Pierce’s Pitt Bar-B-Que  hickory-smoked, Tennessee-style barbecue made with Julius C. "Doc" Pierce’s original barbecue sauce. Peter Chang set to open in Williamsburg 9/28

peter chang china cafe in williamsburg vaLater this month, Peter Chang will debut his third restaurant in central Virginia.

The 170-seat Peter Chang China Cafe will officially open to the public on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 in Williamsburg at 1203 Richmond Rd. Williamsburg VA.

The chef already operates Peter Chang’s China Grill in Charlottesville and the Peter Chang China Cafe in Glen Allen, outside Richmond (which Bon Appetit nominated as one of the 50 best new restaurants in America).

The kitchen at the new Williamsburg restaurant will be run by five chefs whom Lee brought over from China. They have been training under Chang to get familiar with his lengthy menu and his approach to cooking the dishes on it. The menu will be slightly smaller in Williamsburg than in Richmond, but will allow for more specials to help give the restaurant its own feel.

You can download his Richmond menu here.  The menu will be slightly smaller in Williamsburg than in Richmond, but will allow for more specials to help give the restaurant its own feel.”

Acclaimed Chef Peter Chang Coming to Williamsburg

Peter Chang is set to arrive in Williamsburg VA . Inside the food world, this is stupendous, even astounding news, but for most people, Chang is the most famous chef that they’ve never heard of.

He’s a cult figure who’s opened restaurants in Fairfax, Alexandria, Atlanta, Knoxville and Charlottesville. Fans have traded clues about his whereabouts on the web, and he’s been tracked from restaurant to restaurant by Todd Kliman of The Washingtonian, who wrote about his own obsession with Chang’s food in the March 2010 issue of Oxford American. That same month, Calvin Trillin wrote a profile of Chang for the New Yorker.

Peter Chang and his business partner, Gen Lee, are about to expand their Virginia presence with a new restaurant in Williamsburg. They have  just signed a lease for an 8,000-square-foot building on Richmond Road that used to house Wasabi Oriental Buffet.

That’s more than double the size of the Short Pump location , which has been mobbed with customers ever since it opened in February.

Asked how Chang himself will divide his time between restaurants (including the one in Charlottesville), Lee says six master chefs are coming from China to work with him. Three are already here, and one of them, chef Wen-Qiang Huang, is the executive chef at Peter Chang China Café in Short Pump. Huang has worked side-by-side with Chang for 23 years, Lee says. One of the chefs is a master pastry chef, as is Chang’s wife, Lisa, he adds.

The new Peter Chang restaurant in Williamsburg is set to open Oct. 1 2012.

The Williamsburg  Planning Commission approved a site plan Wednesday for the new Cook Out restaurant at 1660 Richmond Rd., formerly the Casa Maya Restaurant.. A spring 2013 opening is planned at this time.

cookout in williamsburgFood lovers can anticipate a wide selection of low-priced cook-out fare, made from quality ingredients. The restaurant specializes in grilled hamburgers and hotdogs (cook-out style), chicken sandwiches, and North Carolina barbecue. Cook Out is also known for its variety of “Creamery Premium” milkshakes with choices like “Banana Pudding” and “Chocolate Cherry”.

The Cook Out combo is all about variety.  It comes with one main selection, and two, rather than just one, side dishes, plus a beverage for $4.25. There are several side dishes to choose from: fries, hush puppies, onion rings, chicken nuggets, a BLT sandwich, and more. In addition, Cook Out allows patrons to add toppings to create their perfect burger, instead of leaving them to modify already-built burgers. Cook Out is also known for its variety of 44 different milkshake flavors, made from natural ingredients.

Cook Out concentrates on its drive-thru business the Williamsburg store will also have tables inside.

In a move that undoubtedly brands Cook Out as a phenomenon of the Bible Belt, a variety of religious phrases are printed on Cook Out’s food packaging: “John 3:16” and “God Bless America” are printed on the cups; “God Bless the USA” and “Galatians 6:10” are printed on the French-fry bags; and “THANK YOU GOD FOR AMERICA” and “Psalms 119:165” are printed on the full size bags.

Cook-Out was created by Morris Reaves. He is currently the owner of the company, with his son Jeremy Reaves serving as CEO.

On May 18, 2012, Cook Out celebrated the grand opening of its 100th store in Florence, SC.

At present, Cook Out has no known corporate website. A fan created website (http://eatcookout.com) provides menu and location information for some locations in the Raleigh-Durham, NC area. There are over 40,000 fans on the unofficial “CookOut” Facebook Group. The corporate “Satisfaction” phone number printed on drink cups is 1-866-547-0011.

Woodruff, chef de cuisine @ Waypoint Seafood & Grill in Williamsburg named chef of the year

kyle woodruff and hans schadler ,waypoint seafood and grillKyle Woodruff earned his diploma from the culinary apprenticeship program at Colonial Williamsburg. But his love for food came from two sets of grandparents living in different parts of the country.

"My mom’s father was the barbecue guy who lived in South Florida," says Woodruff. "We would go there for summers and he would always be cooking out on the grill."

Woodruff also remembers visits to Allentown, Pa., where grandparents on his father’s side had a "huge yard filled with fruits and vegetables. It may be why I gained such a passion for locally grown vegetables and produce."

In both locales, the family would gather around the dinner table for discussions and meals.

Today, Woodruff loves to barbecue at home and describes himself as a "seafood fanatic." His skills have landed him a coveted job as chef de cuisine, basically second in command, at Waypoint Seafood & Grill, the Williamsburg restaurant opened in December by chef Hans Schadler. At the age of 28, Woodruff recently was named chef of the year by the Virginia Chefs Association.

extraordinary cupcakes in WilliamsburgThe new Williamsburg business, Extraordinary Cupcakes, 1220-C Richmond Rd., the area’s first and only cupcakery, was whipped-up by the couple Dyana and Adam Steely in September, but the science and art behind it all goes way back.

Adam, who has 30 years of experience in the restaurant and food service business with Windows on Urbanna Creek, The Frog and The Redneck and, currently Blue Talon Bistro on his professional resume, says he and wife Dyana, a science teacher and lifelong baker inspired by her love of the chemistry and science behind the magic of taste, are thrilled to finally open the doors.

"We love to cook and bake at home," says Adam. "“When we travel we’re always dropping by to visit with chef and restaurateur friends and sampling their foods. Dinner, or lunch in some cases, always ends with something sweet, and cake has always been Dyana’s passion. We believe the memory of great cake stays with you. In fact, when we were growing up—Dyana in the Southwestern part of the state and me near Charlottesville—our mothers made us the exact same homemade birthday cake, and neither of us has forgotten it. So, as we traveled and sampled we made notes, collected ideas and developed recipes in search of the elusive ideal cake.

More Food Options for W&M Students

imageBurgers, fries and milkshakes are making their way to Tribe Square.

The William and Mary Real Estate Foundation has announced Friday that MOOYAH has signed a lease to claim the fourth and final restaurant spot available in the recently completed mixed-use development just off campus that combines student housing and student retail.

It will be the first MOOYAH restaurant in Virginia for the Texas-based restaurant chain.  The Foundation announced in August that The Crust, Pita Pit and Subway Café have signed leases for Tribe Square, located on Richmond Road directly across from campus.

image“With its focus on burgers and fries, MOOYAH is a wonderful compliment to the restaurants already scheduled to be part of Tribe Square,” said Nancy Buchanan, executive director of the William and Mary Real Estate Foundation. “We think the students and the rest of the community will really enjoy having all of these new late-night dining options in town.”

The Crust, a new restaurant concept developed by Baker’s Crust, will become the first eatery to open and plans to start serving its authentic wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, microbrews and other menu items on Monday. The Subway Café, which leverages the chain’s partnership with Seattle’s Best to embrace a coffeehouse ambiance, is scheduled to open in mid-November. The Pita Pit, which offers pita-bread sandwiches, soups and salads, and MOOYAH should both be open by early in the spring semester, Buchanan said.

Both The Crust and Pita Pit have spaces that face Richmond Road that enables them to offer large outdoor cafes for al fresco dining on private terraces. As part of the lease agreements, all the restaurants will remain open until at least 1 a.m.

Tribe Square, which was completed this summer, includes four retail spaces on the first floor and apartment-style student residences on the second and third floor with 14 apartments. The 56-bed facility was completely filled when students returned in August.

Mad About Chocolate Opening in Williamsburg

imageComing in early 2012 !

Marcel Deaulniers, author of Death by Chocolate and former chef/owner of the Trellis Restaurant is opening MAD about Chocolate in Williamsburg VA.

Following a two-year rest (which he apparently spent with visions of chocolate spinning in his head) Marcel Desaulniers, award-winning chef and author of “Death by Chocolate,” will open MAD about Chocolate, a chocolate café.

Yay! A chocolate café!

This  chocolate cafe  will serve Marcel’s over-the-top desserts (he originated Death by Chocolate Cake back in 1982 – long before it became part of the vernacular). MAD about Chocolate will also offer cookies, brownies, ice cream and assorted other concoctions, plus sweet and non-sweet versions of cheesecake, bread pudding, pies as well as soups and beverages.

Doors open in late February or early March. Chef promises indulgences galore – brownies, cookies and ice cream as well as sweet and savory versions of pies, cheesecakes, bread puddings, muffins and soups.

Need more temptation?

Everything will be made from scratch using all-natural ingredients in the MAD about Chocolate open kitchen. With only 12 seats, take-out and internet sales will be a large part of the business.

Marcel will operate MAD about Chocolate with his wife, Connie, an artist who has owned a marketing agency for 22 years. The interior will include Connie’s art, and many of the components – such as tables, light fixtures and display counters – will be created by local artisans.

The art-filled café will be located at the Triangle Building, 204 Armistead Ave., a block from Colonial Williamsburg and The College of William and Mary.

In addition to being chef and  co-owner of the Trellis Restaurant in Colonial Williamsburg’s Merchant Square for 30 years Marcel wrote 10 cookbooks (eight about chocolate) and won numerous culinary awards.
