The New Kent Vineyards will be as complete a community as exists anywhere in the country. But this is not about squeezing in quantity over quality. This is about taking the time with every single decision to make sure it is in rhythm with the land and in synergy with the dreams and desires of the people who have lived in this region and who will soon be living here.
The best way to capture the essence of The New Kent Vineyards is to look at the site plans. You can do that right here on this web site. Explore the residential sites, the golf course and winery, the equestrian center, the trails, lakes, the retail and commercial areas. Take a first glimpse of building elevations and floor plans. Start to see the pieces that will come together.
The New Kent Vineyards will create a high quality rural community using the highest land planning standards that complement the surrounding area. It is our vision that this community will be ecologically sensitive through wetland preservation and gentle grading; that new architecture and structures will be inspired by, but not replicate, existing historical sites; that its neighborhoods will enhance and augment New Kent County’s current economic basis through continued agricultural uses, balanced with commercial uses and supporting residential uses.
It has been said that if you understand the history of New Kent County you will have learned much about the history of our country. Named for County Kent, England, New Kent was founded 120 years before America became America. It is where Captain John Smith met Pocahontas. It is where George Washington and Lafayette traveled through on their way to cornering Cornwallis at Yorktown. It is where a young George Washington met Martha and where President John Tyler met his wife, Letitia Christian.
Everywhere you turn in New Kent County there is a story to be told of a nation emerging on its way to greatness. The farms, the estates and churches, the businesses. every one holds a rich place in the history of this region and the country.
The undulating topography of this Rees Jones course is enough to make your golf outing special. Add in the clubhouse, winery, and immaculate attention to service, and you have a golf experience that is very, very special.
Horse Center
The Viniterra Equestrian Facility was inspired by the famed Middleburg Training Center. The center will provide back-to-back stalls, tack rooms, and a sandy surface around the perimeter of the barn that will enable tenants to ride during inclement weather. A riding ring will be cut into the hillside in front of the stable for showings and dressage events, and miles of riding and carriage trails will be yours to enjoy.
Winery
After eight years of planning, planting, and building, the New Kent Winery opened in May 2008. New Kent is a 12,000 square-foot winery built with green values that reflects the founders’ deep sense of commitment to the fundamentals of winemaking and their sense of responsibility for carefully preserving the history and culture of Virginia. The New Kent Vineyard is leading the way in creating the next chapter of our esteemed commonwealth’s wine history.
Golf
The Club at Viniterra is the newest championship golf course designed by acclaimed golf course architect Rees Jones. Our course features working vineyards alongside fairways throughout, a signature hallmark of the new Viniterra community. This members-only course is scheduled to open in Spring 2009.
The course will be maintained using environmentally conservational practices. Unlike many courses, The Club at Viniterra will be entirely sodded to save as much as 80% of the water consumed by traditional courses, and the course will use only the grass hybrid “Celebration,” which is far more draught-resistant and requires 70% less water to maintain than traditional course sods. And, The Club at Viniterra course will never use potable water for irrigation. Instead, a series of ponds will collect rainwater and runoff to distribute this water to the course for all required irrigation, making it virtually self-sustaining.
The Club at Viniterra Golf Course features:
- A wide variety of natural elevations that change as much as 70 feet from
tee to green on several holes - Multiple tee boxes can be found on each hole to provide overall yardage
and angle-of-play flexibility for golfers of all skill levels to have challenging
but enjoyable play - The course can measure anywhere between 5,300 and 7,600 yards depending on which tee markers a golfer elects to play
- Stately old-growth oak trees as corner points along several of the
course’s keyholes - Estate homesites placed to have minimal impact on the golf experience
The course also will feature The Club at Viniterra Clubhouse, which will be managed by ClubCorp of America. This 14,000-square-foot clubhouse, pro shop, teaching studio, and practice range is scheduled to begin opening in 2009.
POLO
Full-size, competition-worthy polo fields will be available for those who prefer their time in the saddle to be a bit more competitive. Viniterra will become a center of polo club activity in Virginia. Professional field maintenance will be provided so that treading-in will only be required at halftimes.
And, our polo grounds will play host to a number of wine festivals. For those seeking the very best of Virginia wine, polo, and golf, Viniterra will be the exceptional community that brings it all together.
Shopping
What wonders will you find at the Town Village? Everything you can imagine and more. The village shops will provide residents with shopping, medical services, and a wide and varied selection of restaurants and boutiques. And don’t forget the charming farmer’s market, which will be thoughtfully stocked with local organic produce for those perfect meals at home.

Hovnanian Homes as the exclusive builder, a variety of market-rate housing opportunities, estate homes, a signature golf course, vineyards, a winery, country inn, a village center and over 650,000 square feet of retail and office space. Numerous community amenities will complement the vast open spaces that will be preserved within and around this signature development. Additional land is also controlled by the development partnership, which will allow for further expansion of the program over the coming years as well.
Build-out of New Kent Vineyards will likely take 8-10 years . Lot deliveries are expected to start in late 2007 with homes anticipated in early 2008.
The Farms of New Kent is located on approximately 2,113 acres and located 30 miles east of Richmond. 30 miles west of Williamsburg.. The community eventually will feature 2,500 homes, 650,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, and tourist and recreational amenities, including a working vineyard and an 18-hole championship golf course.
The championship course that will wind among the estate homes of the Viniterra neighborhood is scheduled for
opening in June 2009, and its renowned designer, Rees Jones, will be in attendance at the grand opening.
Fully developed home sites in the first phases of both neighborhoods are virtually complete. Development of Viniterra’s estate lots are well under way.
Estate homes and a championship golf course have become the classic pairing in many upscale communities. In Viniterra, the nature of the land
itself joins in for a perfect threesome. As acreage for the spectacular Rees Jones design has been cleared, the topography has revealed itself to be
ideally suited to the envisioned course design. In fact, the inevitable surprises that come with the course’s construction have added to make it
even more of a spectacular design.
All eighteen holes of the new course have emerged from the rolling woodlands. Tees, fairways, greens, cart paths, ponds and lakes are being
shaped on all of the holes—including a par-3 hole with fifteen tee boxes . Rees Jones has visited the course a number of times, making adjustments
that will result in a truly first-class course. Water resources will be maximized by tapping the course’s lakes and ponds for irrigation and by
using drought-resistant grasses and other suitable planting materials. The streets that will define the first phases of Vinterra’s residential
neighborhoods are largely in place and are being paved this spring. Builders and prospective residents now have access to tour homesites as they are
taking shape. In the meantime, the community’s completed gatehouse welcomes visitors to a neighborhood defined by such a spectacular golf course.
The Club at Viniterra will feature its own clubhouse with extensive amenities, including full-service restaurants, men’s and ladies locker rooms and a golf teaching studio.
Shops, restaurants, a bed-and-breakfast, and even equestrian amenities are all features of this imaginative plan. Within the neo-traditional Village will be commercial, retail and residential components anchored by a pedestrian mall and Farmers Market.
Winemaking in this region dates to the early 1600s, when British law required the planting of 20 grapevines for each adult male colonist. New Kent Winery is more than 12,000 square feet in size and built with more than 70 percent reclaimed materials including 40-foot heart pine trusses and pre-Civil War brick.
