Living in Port Anne Neighborhood, Williamsburg Virginia

From the Daily Press  4/11/2008

This is a great first person article from a resident of Williamsburg Virginia who now lives in the Port Anne neighborhood

Adjacent to College Creek in Williamsburg is a single-family neighborhood with rolling hills and plenty of lush greenery.

Port Anne is smaller than some neighborhoods, featuring 112 home sites, nine of which are unbuilt.

The quiet community is full of history and convenient in its location, within walking distance to Colonial Williamsburg and shopping.

These attributes are what drew Nancy Carter to the neighborhood two years ago from Washington. As the president of the homeowners association, Carter said she’s found the biggest thing that stands out in Port Anne is the friendliness of its neighbors.

Question: It goes without saying that Williamsburg is full of history. What have you learned about the area where Port Anne was built?

Answer: The community was built along College Creek. In the 1600s, ships with cargo for Williamsburg residents would tie up here along the banks and unload. You can see traces of the old roads that still exist. Before the first house was built, there was an archaeological dig that uncovered traces of old buildings and several grave sites.

Question: Anything unique about your house?

Answer : Well, actually, we found out that our own house sits atop the location of an old house and there were graves found under the street in front of our home. There are artifacts from the dig in the display case in the neighborhood clubhouse.

Question : What drew you to Port Anne?

Answer: When my husband and I were looking for a house, we picked Port Anne because of its location and because it’s small and quiet. It’s really gorgeous. The rolling terrain also allows homes here to have basements, which isn’t something you see a lot of in the Tidewater area.

Question: Who lives there?

Answer : We are a mix of retirees and working couples. Almost exactly half the households consist of retirees, the other half have full-time working people as residents.

Question: What is the neighborhood proud of?

Answer : We won the City of Williamsburg’s Beautification Award in 2005. The city of Williamsburg’s Beautification Advisory Committee began the program in early 2001 to recognize members of the community for contributions to the beautification of the city.

Question: What about recreation?

Answer : College Landing Park is right next door. It is a lovely, small park providing opportunities to launch kayaks and canoes. It has a boardwalk that allows park users to observe the marsh life. Within the neighborhood we have a clubhouse, pool and tennis court.

Question : I hear that is a lot of wildlife in the neighborhood?

Answer : Oh yes, we see deer and fox. Since we are butted up to a state park, we definitely see a lot of wildlife. Last year there was a whole family of swans living in College Creek that we could see.

Question : What challenges does your neighborhood deal with?

Answer : I can’t highlight any single thing, really. I think we are pretty typical. We have all the typical issues that other neighborhoods have. Since we are small, we don’t have any financial problems like some of the larger neighborhoods.

Question: What activities are there and how active is the board?

Answer : The Board of Directors meets the fourth Tuesday of each month. Committees change each year, but we generally do activities on all the big holidays. This year we organized a Super Bowl party at the clubhouse.

Question : What do you like best about living in Port Anne?

Answer : We do quite well at being neighborly with each other. As a community, we’re not nosy, but we do have a caring relationship. I know everybody on my cul-de-sac. It was wonderful coming from the city to the South where you have wonderful neighbors. It’s pretty nice.
