USA Today Article about Williamsburg VA

Saw this article in USA Today and thought I would share. A previous article in Money Magazine rated Williamsburg as one of the top five place to retire in the USA. Now USA Today is recommending Williamsburg as a great area for a 2nd home purchase.
It’s great to receive all of this national and worldwide attention to out area. The Today Show was here recently filming a live episode from the restored area of Colonial Williamsburg. The 3 hour remote feed gave viewers a look into our wonderful region.

You can read the full article by Larry Olmstead in USA Today. Below are some highlights from the article.

Williamsburg , Virginia ,The best known city in  a region of Virginia known as the “Historic Triangle,” aptly nicknamed “where America began.” The claim is no exaggeration: In 1607, 13 years before the Pilgrims reached the shores of Massachusetts, three ships of pioneers landed in Jamestown, Va., the first permanent English settlement in the USA.

Today, Jamestown Settlement is just one of several historic sites packed into the area. The most popular is Colonial Williamsburg, which occupies the city of Williamsburg’s Historic Area. It’s a place where life today goes on just as it did more than 200 years ago, down to blacksmiths and farmers dressed for the part, all thanks to the non-profit Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is the hub of our wheel, the centerpiece of the entire community .A lot of the people looking at second homes have visited it once or twice, or in some cases every year, and just fell in love with the place.

In addition to its wealth of historic sites and newer attractions such as the Busch Gardens amusement park, the region also is appealing for what residents say is its quality of life.

Everyone has a checklist of things they look for in a place, in ‘quality of life.’ We have a lot of things on those lists: small-town feel, a college town, four distinct seasons yet a mild climate. We are just an hour from the Atlantic and 2½ from the nation’s capital.”

The area is popular, too, with members of the military because of several large bases and stations nearby. Moreover, compared with other desirable second-home destinations, home prices in Williamsburg are reasonable: Seven-figure properties are almost unheard of.

The city of Williamsburg is small, just 9 square miles. Its population is 13,000 — nearly half of whom are students at the College of William & Mary. Much of the city is occupied by the Historic Area and the college, but most locals don’t differentiate between “downtown” and the nearby suburbs, just few minutes away.

Until not so long ago, most second homes have been in large, gated golf communities such as Kingsmill and Ford’s Colony. But a “new urbanism” has taken hold, an in-town mix of retail, commercial, residential, dining, services and entertainment.

A look at three Williamsburg neighborhoods:

• Kingsmill. Occupying nearly 3,000 acres, this resort development is owned by brewery giant Anheuser Busch. In addition to condos, townhouses and single-family houses, Kingsmill includes a hotel, spa, marina, restaurants, golf and tennis. Most townhouses or single-family houses are in the $300,000 to $500,000 range.

New Town. This 365-acre mixed-use village just outside the city, is an ongoing partnership between a construction company and the College of William & Mary’s endowment. It includes shopping and dining as well as condos and townhouses, with single-family houses planned. One-bedroom condos start at $229,000.

Downtown. Port Anne and Holly Hills and High Street are the primary options here. Port Anne and Holly are quiet, upscale neighborhoods of single-family houses near the college. Expect to pay $500,000 to $800,000. High Street is a new mixed-use development similar to New Town, except smaller at about 50 acres and without an office/business park component. Home prices also are similar to those in New Town.

Living in Williamsburg Virginia ( A locals point of view )

I thought I would post again to give a better sense of living in the Williamsburg VA area. Just listing what’s here doesn’t tell a story. It’s hilly here.  There is a 7-11 five minutes from our house.( one of only two in the area)  We live in the very back of a larger neighborhood . You don’t hear any traffic or planes. There is a two mile trail thru the woods behind our house. When walking there or looking out our windows we often see deer ( munching on our plants ugh !) There is a pool and clubhouse within the neighborhood. In the summer the pool is overflowing with kids. Friday night neighbors order pizza , bring beer and join each other at the pool until 10 pm. Many social events are help in our neighborhood thru the year for kids, adults and families. All are well attended. Within 2 miles of our house are the area football/ soccer/ baseball facility sports. ( WISC/ Warhill)  The football/ soccer fields are brand new and have artificial turf.  Sports for kids are very big here considering the size of the community. No matter what sports  your kids  do there is a well supported team here in Williamsburg. I am amazed at the dedication of the volunteers/ coaches on all of the various teams our kids have participated in.  My nine year old plays on a football team that is coached like an NFL team ( that’s a good thing they went to the playoffs last year) . They get to play their next game at Zable Stadium, the Williams and Mary Football Stadium. The other son’s football team is playing an exhibition scrimmage during half time of a William and Mary football Game. What an incredible event for a 10 year old to participate in ! Freedom Park is 2 miles from our house it contains 10+ miles of hilly mountain bike trails. Growing up in Va Beach I didn’t know what hills were. Try riding a mounting bike for an hour or two, it will wear you out. My kids love them too. Two miles in the other direction are a Rec Center with indoor pool, basketball, indoor tract, fitness center, skateboard park etc.  Less than 10 minutes away is Colonial Williamsburg where  $10  gets you an annual pass ( Good Neighbor) to everything it has to offer. ( kids are free ) Numerous churches that welcome you with open arms. Schools are wonderful. Teachers and staff are the best.

Our neighbors and friends are the best. If we need someone to watch the kids we just ask. We have rarely had to use a sitter.

Within 10 minutes of where we live in Williamsburg James City County are a Ukrops, ( favorite)  Trader Joes, ( favorite ) Farm Fresh, Bloom, Fresh Market for groceries, Prime Outlets with an outlet store for almost anything, Wal Mart ( yes we shop there, now more than ever ) Target, Starbucks, Barnes and Noble,  Home Depot, Lowe’s, Movie Theater, New Town ( main street area with shops and restaurants.  Lots of family owned Restaurants, as well as a large number of chains that have great food and local management. Some of the best golf in the state of Virginia is here in Williamsburg. Over 15 courses are within a 15 minute drive . There are 13 different parks within 10 minutes. Both County and State run. In these you can hike, run, camp ride mountain bikes, kayak, boat, fish, picnic, go the playground, play football, volleyball, baseball, soccer, softball, and much more. Drive the Colonial Parkway from Jamestown to Yorktown ( free admission to both museums if you live here ) The parkway has to be one of the most scenic drives around. You can drive 23 miles along the York and the James Rivers without seeing any commercial establishments.. It’s a nice bike ride too although the surface is pretty rough..

Our arts scene is very active as well. Museums, Ballet, Symphony, Theater  are all well represented. I will admit that the music scene in Williamsburg could use some help. We do travel to Newport News, Norfolk, VA Beach, Richmond for bans which don’t do concerts here.

Moving or relocating to Williamsburg VA

I have a few questions about possibly moving/ relocating to  Williamsburg VA

  1. How friendly are the people?  Williamsburg VA is a melting pot of nationalities. To me it is one of the friendliest places we have lived. If you have children get them involved in sports or school activities and you will meet tons of families who are very outgoing.
  2. Are there plenty of activities for children and active adults?   Yes and Yes. Depends on what your children like to do but ours enjoy Busch Gardens, Water Country, Colonial Williamsburg, Summer Camps, Boating, Jet Skiing, Horse back riding, football ( playing and watching, tailgating at W & M)), soccer, basketball, baseball track and field, bowling, movies, hiking, swimming ( lots of swim teams) Mountain Biking, lacrosse,  The Beach in VA Beach or Outer Banks, The Mountains ( 2.5 hours away, Virginia Living Museum ( animals, reptiles, fish, etc, festivals, Great Wolf Lodge ( in the winter for birthday parties) Kayaking,  Skate Park near the Rec Center, The Rec Center ( indoor pool ) The Christmas Parade, Forth of July, Grand Illumination, Kidsburg ( when they were younger) snowboarding ,Skiing in the mountains ( 3 hours away)
  3. For adults, in addition to the above we enjoy  at running ( my wife) cycling ( me), concerts at Lake MAtoaka, VA Arts Festival, Williamsburg, Syphonia, Museums, Corner Pocket, Kimball Theater, Great Restaurants,  VA Arts Festivals, Farmers Market on DOG St., Shakespeare Festival, Polo Cup, An occasion for the arts, Tennis, Golf the list goes on…
  4. What is the cost to rent a nice house? Definitely. There are numerous homes in great neighborhoods for $2000 and below. Currently there are some in Fords Colony, Stonehouse ( a $600k new home),Windsor Forest, Brandon Woods, Landfall at Jamestown and many more.
  5. Is is sunny most of the year? Besides winter of course.  Very sunny maybe too sunny. It was a very dry summer… kind of humid in the Summer.
  6. How harsh is the winter? Very mild. We hardly ever get an accumulation of snow anymore in Williamsburg. I haven’t had to shovel any snow in over 6 years.
  7. Do you have a hospital near by? Brand new Sentara Williamsburg  ttp://www.sentara.com/Sentara/HospitalsFacilities/Hospitals/Williamsburg/ They are trying to get another hospital approved on the east side of Williamsburg as well.
