Work is continuing to progress on the Ironbound Road Improvement Project. You may have noticed crews placing and testing a significant amount of underground piping in the construction area. This was a substantial effort with coordination from other agencies, including the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) and the James City Service Authority. Although the HRSD line is now complete, you can expect more underground work for sanitary sewer lines and storm drain lines in the coming weeks. As this work is completed, curb and gutter will be installed.
Once the sewer and storm drain line installations are complete, construction can begin on the new asphalt roadway.
No new traffic patterns are anticipated for the near future; however, please continue to practice caution when traveling in the construction area.
The Ironbound Road Improvement Project has been underway since fall 2010 and is within budget and on schedule for completion in December 2012. The multi-phased project includes widening Ironbound Road from two lanes to four with two travel lanes in each direction, intersection improvements, additional turn lanes and a shared-use recreational path.
