Fat Canary Williamsburg, VA Best Restaurants of Williamsburg

One of the first questions I get when people come to Williamsburg VA to look at property is :

Do you  have any dining suggestions in Williamsburg ?  We heard the Trellis is good. Any opinions on that one?  Any other restaurants  we should try out ?

Answer:  Williamsburg is home to some of the finest restaurants in the eastern United States ( IMHO) . Our favorite is the Fat Canary on Duke of Gloucester St. Near the historic area of Colonial Williamsburg and a jewel of an eatery if there ever was. It is on the pricey side and make sure you have  reservations Be sure to ask for the table in the window if you have four or more.  Located on Duke of Gloucester St ( aka DOG St.) , next door to the Craft House A smallish place with an open air terrace for alfresco dining, and a fun, contemporary interior.  This is a great place to eat. It has a “bistro” atmosphere, a little noisy at times, but well worth it. The chef provides great food as well as an excellent presentation. You won’t find a huge menu, but you will find several seafood dishes, pork, steak, and chicken.  We’ve never had a bad meal or experienced poor service. Amazing  The Fat Canary has no website. Apparently when you are that good you don’t need one !

Service is fantastic. Waiters are  attentive, knowledgeable of all menu offerings and skilled at making wine recommendations to complement dinner selections. Prices are a little on the high end, but appropriate considering thefood and the experience. For weekend dinner, reservations are a must. Holidays and other popular weekends will require calling a couple of weeks or more in advance. The restaurant is connected to the Cheese Shop, a Williamsburg staple since the 70’s. If you have the time and are a wine lover, take a few minutes to browse the shop’s wine cellar downstairs. It is impressive.

Unpretentious upscale dining and high energy bar describe the atmosphere in Fat Canary, located in the heart of Williamsburg in Merchants Square adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg.  This bold, contemporary bistro with an open kitchen features a menu that reflects Executive Chef Thomas Power’s diverse regional and ethnic experiences: New Orleans, southern California, Hawaii and North Carolina. Also a graduate of the CIA, Power opened this elegant but casual “New American” eatery in June 2004, offering intimate seating for 60.  Adjacent to The Cheese Shop, which will celebrate 35 years in 2006, the family-owned dining duo is loved by locals.  Only a few months after opening, the managing editor of the local Flat Hat newspaper, Dan Schumacher, wrote, “If the Flat Hat still had a star system, the Fat Canary would get a solid five.”
